Chapter 52: Straight-A Student

Laker let out a cold grunt and said, “There are many holes in your clothes, but the round holes are very special. Those have clearly been made by the claws of a Magical Beast that has Magic Power. The claws left behind round holes in your clothes but did not injure your skin, so we can deduce the length of the beast’s claws. We can then estimate the size of the claw based on the distance between the different holes. There are only about twelve Black Iron or Bronze Magical Beasts with claws of that length and size.”

Laker continued, “Furthermore, a portion of the holes in your clothes are very thin. They were not torn by fangs. Clearly, they were made by sharp Magical Beast fur or little claws. There are already the claw marks that we established earlier, which means that these wounds were made by sharp Magical Beast fur. There are many Magical Beasts with fur like that, over 30 at the Black Iron or Bronze level. Your skin has clearly been injured by the cold, which means that the Magical Beast is of the ice element. The scratches on your skin are very unique. They have been deliberately restrained. This shows that the Magical Beast had exquisite control over their strength.

“It is clear as day that only the Frost Wolf meets all of these possibilities. Furthermore, Teacher Niedern specializes in ice-element magic. The Frost Wolf he summons is extremely powerful, and it would not be surprising for it to be able to control its strength with such precision.”

Su Ye looked at Laker, dazed. They were in the same class together? They were studying the same subjects?

Ebert said enviously, “He stored all of the second-year subjects into his spellbook during the summer vacation. He should have finished studying the bulk of it by now.”

“All of it,” Laker added.

Then, Laker said, “Unsurprisingly, Su Ye, you have advanced to the level of Mage Apprentice, haven’t you? Otherwise, Teacher Niedern would not have given you two consecutive days of special training. Since Teacher Niedern got a Frost Wolf to help you train, it means that ordinary Magical Beasts are not a challenge for you. This also means that you would have at least grasped one exceptional spell. It is too slow to learn the other spells. An offensive spell that can be mastered quickly, that should be Magic Rope, right? I was wondering why there was a slight bulge in your belt while Teacher Niedern’s waist area seemed to have become thinner. As it turns out, he has given you his Magic Cow Rope.”

Su Ye let out a frustrated smile. Was this the brain of a straight-A student?

Laker continued, “I remember now. During meditation class, Teacher Niedern said that he could see if students were approaching the Divine Realm Light. He was referring to you, wasn’t he? I also recall the direction of Teacher Niedern’s gaze that day. Hutton was beaten up by his father because he realized that you were a Mage Apprentice yesterday, didn’t he? Teacher Niedern was not angry when you were late yesterday afternoon because he knew that you had advanced when he saw you. But you did not directly advance in level during the meditation class, which meant that you advanced after you went home on the first day and meditated.”

The gazes of the other students shot back and forth between the two of them. They suddenly had the feeling that these two top students were pitting themselves against each other using different methods. It was exciting.

Soon, a few of the students came to their senses. Why had they mocked Su Ye in the past?

Hort was dazed. He muttered to himself, “Is Su Ye already this powerful?”

Palos sat up straight with her usual arrogant look. There was a flash of pride in her eyes as if to say that she had already noticed all of this a long time ago.

Rolon observed Su Ye seriously. He placed his hand on his leather robe and gently scratched it. He soon dug out a small piece of fabric.

Su Ye coughed softly and said, “You exaggerate, Laker. I was merely lucky and found a good Divine Realm Light, so I was one step closer when it came to advancement.”

“You… You should have immense talent in terms of meditation.” Laker voiced out his final deduction.

Su Ye fought back the urge to roll his eyes. Were children these days all so intelligent?

At this moment, the looks everyone gave Su Ye changed.

Everyone knew that having good grades in their studies helped them in terms of magic. However, they knew that even the ability of a photographic memory was incomparable to meditation talent in the world of magic.

In Greece, mages who were knowledgeable would never be able to beat a mage who could fight.

Ebert said enviously, “Photographic memory can be achieved using legendary spells, but there is currently no one who can cultivate spirits with meditation talent. Su Ye, you sure are lucky. I cannot do it, my luck is too bad.”

Su Ye returned to his seat and looked at his spellbook. He wanted to say that he had no meditation talent and that he had found success in meditation by using the correct method and by training bitterly for years.

His first year of practicing “mindfulness” had been filled with pain. He could not get the hang of things and was constantly filled with doubt and dismissal. He had also been mocked and called useless. He had even given up many times. He had only reached such a state through the use of correct methods, effort, humility, persistence, and patience. He had not seen results in the first year of practice. It had only proven useful later. He would have given up if he was too short-sighted.

“It might not be luck,” Laker suddenly said.

Palos, Rolon, and a few other people with the best grades in class nodded in unison.

Hort froze for a moment and said, “I also think that Laker makes sense. Have you all not noticed that Su Ye’s attitude and studies this semester have become different? He used to love to stare blankly into space, but now he likes to study together with me.”

Ebert shook his head and said, “I would be able to study seriously too if I had his talent.”

At this moment, a commotion came from outside the classroom. Several students looked outside the window.

They saw upperclassmen walking outside in high spirits.

Hort suddenly slapped his thigh and said, “It was no wonder why they were so excited and we cannot use the arena today. There’s a competition between us and the Noble Academy today!”

“That’s unfortunate, only third-years and above can go watch the event. We might have a chance to see it if the meet lasts until school is over.”

“Why don’t… we skip class?”

“It’s crawling with teachers there, forget it.”

“Then let’s not attend the self-study lesson.”

The students in class slipped into a discussion.

Su Ye had a bad feeling.

“The inhumane Teacher Niedern is not going to get me to attend the competition today, is he? The Plato Academy has always been suppressed by the Noble Academy. Those representing us are unlucky. Furthermore, I only have a rope.”

Su Ye looked at his waist, frustrated.

The bell for the first class of the afternoon rang.

While sighing, the students of the class flipped open their spellbooks.

Su Ye listened to the lesson seriously and quickly made a simple mind map after the class was over. He then took some time to go over the classes he missed in the morning.

The second to last class was not over when Niedern suddenly walked in and interrupted the ongoing History of Magic Spells class.

Teacher Cartelius of the History of Magic Spells class seemed to have known about this beforehand. He stopped lecturing the moment Niedern entered the room.

Niedern’s face was void of expression. He said, “The competition of the bronze and black iron levels are over. We are now going to conduct the practical battles of the apprentice level. All students can go watch the competition at the arena.”

“That’s great!”

The sounds of chairs scraping the ground rang out in unison. Everyone grabbed their spellbooks and ran out of the class.

Some people from the fifth table did not move.

Laker looked at Su Ye.

Su Ye did not want to go.

Palos and Rolon both knitted their brows.

Niedern told Palos and Rolon, “The two of you can look from the roof of the library beside the arena.

The two of them relaxed their brows.

Finally, Niedern stared at Su Ye.

Su Ye sensed Niedern’s gaze and said in frustration, “Teacher, I have a stomach ache. I don’t want to go.”
